A Life Made Of Wood

A Life Made Of Wood

Theatrical performance under research By Maya Omaya Keesh and Siwar Awad

‏‎‏Based on texts written by Sheikha Hlewa

‏ An experimental theatrical show that originated from the short story “A Life Made of Wood” from the collection “Al-Talbia C345” by the author Sheikha Hlewa, and continues with selected stories from the series “Give one more Summer.”

‏ In "A Life Made of Wood" we look at the continuous attempt to satisfy within a personal and imaginary social framework. We use the deconstruction of the presented characters and track their choices and circumstances, in order to ask about the extent of the freedom of the personal decision of the human being, and the woman in particular.

‏ On stage, the actress performs inside a closed space the is determined by a pre-planned movement, trying to perform her work in the best way, and to fully commit to the laws of the theatrical game.  We place the act of trying to please in a performative laboratory through which we ask: If frames are an essential part of our identities and our need to belong - are they breakable?  Is accepting the frameworks and submitting to them and surrender, or is there a possible and achievable space between the complete acceptance of the frameworks and the revolution against them?

Homes | Literary Theatrical Show

Homes | Literary Theatrical Show

In the summer of 2021, a group of Palestinian female and male writers met to engage in a collective experience, named “The Body of Speech”. They were seeking to broaden their writing experience through trying their texts on stage. “Home” was their theme of choice which they studied from several approaches; intellectual, cultural, and literary. Together, they discussed, developed, and practiced rehearsing the theme on stage. They then experimented with conjuring a literary-theatrical show that recounts the story of their home(s), of places and their memory, of what is left of childhood, of chaos and order, of sadness, of carton boxes, of olive seasons, of photographic albums …. The story of a profusion of emotions and meanings concealed in words in which we dwell—the words of our daily lives and usual writings; the ones we’re accustomed to.

Geometry and people

Geometry and people

A cosmic event transforms the planet's inhabitants into geometric shapes, among which a struggle ensues over major life issues within the context of geometric laws and human values.

"Attack!!! Destruction. Civil war. Over trivial reasons. A spark that burns a neighborhood. Making a mountain out of a molehill. They tore the social fabric. There's no winner, everyone loses. We thank God it's a play and not reality. Although the reality is more painful. They destroyed all the geometric shapes and all human values. A geometric collapse. It mirrors a societal collapse.

What to do then? Despair is not allowed. Nor pessimism. Let's come together to rebuild the shapes and rejuvenate the country anew with a life of safety, tolerance, and law without violence and discrimination based on color, race, religion, without favoritism or crime."
